Surdulica Flag

Serbian cross

The feature within the Surdulica Flag that distinguishes its national identity is the cross of Serbia

Surdulica Flag

Surdulica

Surdulica is a tiny town in the southeast of Serbia, about 25 kilometres west of the Bulgarian border.

Between the town and the border are lush mountains, rich in wildlife, particularly rare species of migrating birds and mountain flowers. A flower is therefore a fitting adornment to the centre of the cross on the city's emblem. (If you have further information about this flower, please email us)

In neighbouring Croatia, white chrysanthemums are symbolic of death. So a sombre interpretation for the flower in the flag could be in remembrance of the collateral damage of the 1999 NATO 'accidental' bombing.
