1 Timothy

The first epistle of Paul the Apostle to Timothy, chapter 2, New English Translation and King James Version

Chapter 2

New English Translation

Prayer for All People

   1 First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people, 2 even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 Such prayer for all is good and welcomed before God our Savior, 4 since he wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle - I am telling the truth; I am not lying - and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8 So I want the men to pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without anger or dispute.

Conduct of Women

   9 Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, 10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. 11 A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first and then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression. 15 But she will be delivered through childbearing, if she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control.

King James Version

   1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
   2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
   3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
   4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
   5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
   6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
   7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
   8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
   9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
   10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
   11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
   12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
   13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
   14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
   15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
